Roadtrip to Alor Setar

On 30 Jan 2012, Mr.Y and I went on a roadtrip to Alor Setar, Kedah for a friend's wedding.

This was my first roadtrip to Kedah. Usually, "roadtrips" for me means 4-hour drive to my kampong in JB. Kedah is even further away from KL as compared to JB so this recent roadtrip took us about 5 hours! Can't imagine people driving back to Kedah during festive seasons. Just an advice -- save up some money for a plane ticket. Haha.

So finally, after the long drive, we arrived in Alor Setar. The wedding was held at Ukir Mall. It's a handicraft mall + hall for weddings & special events. It was a nice wedding, the emcee was not bad. He could make people laugh and the next moment make people cry. The power of psychology :-)

Here's a photo of the bride & groom which I managed to capture. The groom, Suhail, was our classmate in Uniten. The best man, Hafzan, was also our classmate and the bridesmaid, Aisyah, was my housemate during second year :-)

After the wedding, we checked in to Hotel Grand Continental. We booked through booking.com. We trusted this website. We booked the hotel for our Stockholm trip through this site and the entire process was hassle-free and the hotel turned out to be amazing. No such luck this time. Yes, the price for Grand Continental was reasonable and the reviews seemed OK. But the actual state of the hotel was very much different compared to those photos posted on booking.com!

It was an old hotel. Really, really old. It's like one of those hotels you see in Pudu.

OK, the photos do not really reflect how old the hotel is. The last photo -- we prefered to keep the curtains closed at all time because this is the "breathtaking" view we got if we look outside:

 

The bathroom was similar to the one back at my hostel in Uniten:

Even though the toilet looked like a hostel toilet, the hot shower was working fine and I was so grateful for that!!!

Another bad thing about the hotel was that -- no joke -- there was no power socket to charge your gadgets! I had to move the cabinet a bit and unplug the refrigerator so that I could charge my phone:

On top of that, Celcom coverage in Alor Setar was reallyyy bad so I had no Internet access and got stuck watching Planet of the Apes on Fox Movies. By the way, Fox Movies was the only interesting channel available there.

For dinner, Mr.Y and I planned to find Mee Abu but Waze betrayed us and we couldn't find the place. We wanted to try the local food but there were only stalls, no proper restaurants so we ended up eating Domino's pizza.

The next day, we had breakfast at the hotel. On our way to the lift, there was an awful smell in the hotel corridor because a guest left a bunch of room-service food leftovers outside their room and none of the hotel staffs clean it up. Yuck.

As expected, breakfast at the hotel's coffeehouse was disappointing. The only thing I could swallow was baked beans. The fried rice, fried noodles and other food were horrible.

After breakfast, we immediately drove back to KL. Once we arrived, we had ayam penyet for lunch. Goooooood foooooood....

Note: Parking at the hotel was very limited. I wonder how they can cater for guest parking during peak season...

Vanilla

I'm happy today cos I did what I love the most -- shopping.

Hubby wanted to go to Ikea so we woke up early in the morning and headed straight there without having our breakfast beforehand! I didn't go crazy at Ikea like I always do, the reason is because I haven't got my December salary yet...sob sob. So I just bought a bunch of children hangers:

I'm glad that these children hangers can fit my UK size 6-8 clothes. The children hangers are cute, colourful and most importantly, cheap (RM 4.90 for a pack of 8). I bought 4 packs! Next week my plan is to iron and hang all of my clothes since 90% of my wardrobe consists of fabrics that crease easily.

Another thing which I've purchased is the Coffee Bean French Deluxe Vanilla Powder (Fat Free & No Sugar Added). I've always loved their Ice Blended Caramel & Ice Blended Vanilla and this vanilla powder is one of the important ingredients for both drinks. So excited to make my own Ice Blended Vanilla, hope it'll turn out well!

At first I was contemplating whether to buy the Special Dutch Chocolate Powder or this Vanilla Powder. In the end I chose the Vanilla Powder because Vanilla has more health benefits compared to chocolate (not sure if this is really true or not...).

I googled the benefits of vanilla and here are some of the important points which I've found:

1. Helps with nausea (not that I experience any...)

2. Weight loss aid (yeay!!!)

3. Reduces anxiety and stress (might be useful for me...)

4. Healing of wounds

5. Regulates menstruation

My Last FOC:Trip to London - Day 2

On the second day in London, we went to Trafalgar Square.

These people were drawing all the flags of the countries in the world using colourful chalks.

Oh, and there's a giant clock to countdown to London Olympics 2012.

Then, we took the tube to St.James Park.

St.James Park was very near to Buckingham Palace but my shoes were killing me (despite changing from a 3-inch heels to a 1-inch pump shoes) so I had to forget about taking photos at the palace.

Juice recipe books

Now that I've got my juicer, I've been tirelessly making different kinds of fruit juices. OK, not many kind. Just apple juice and tomato juice so far. So off I went to MPH Great Eastern Mall, looking for juice & smoothies recipe books.

Found 3 recipe books: Food Lovers Smoothies & Juices (RM12.90), Miracle Juices (RM24.90) and Juices, Smoothies & Shakes (RM11.90). All three books showed pictures of mouthwatering juices and I can't decide which one to buy so I bought all three.



I also bought a bunch of fruits at Cold Storage...starfruit, tomatoes, apples, kiwi...you name it. I've got all the species of fruits covered.

For the past two days I've been drinking a lot of apple and tomato juice. If my skin doesn't glow and all the bad toxins are still in my body, then I don't know what else to say.

My birthday lunch

Things at my workplace can be so unexpected.

I would come in one day and expect a free day ahead, but then I would be bombarded with tons of work. Sometimes I came to work, expecting to be my boss' Siamese twin for the day and get stuck with her for project planning sessions. Turns out she leaves me alone and I spend the day counting down the minutes to 5.30pm.

Today something unexpected happened...my colleagues REMEMBER my birthday (which falls on 4th February) and they treated me out for lunch at Gino's in Ara Damansara!

In the morning, they were talking about eating out and complained that they got no transport. I ignored the hint (I hate driving ok!). Around 11am they brought up the subject again and they invited me and they said that they're going to treat me out for lunch since my birthday will be on this Friday. So if people invite you for lunch and offers to pay since your birthday's coming up, you can't say no, right? So I said yes.

I thought that I'll be driving so I took out my keys and prayed silently that I won't get stopped by any police because I left my driving license at home. Luckily my colleague Ain was driving.

The food was awesome! We ordered fettucine carbonara, Mamma Mia pizza, seafood platter, Italian apple pie & brownies with ice cream for dessert. The seafood platter consists of mussels, prawns, cuttlefish and grilled dory. My colleagues forced me to eat the mussels. According to them it's very delicious. I said no thanks, I don't like mussels. I've never tried mussels before. I'm not adventurous when it comes to seafood. Usually I'll stick to fish and prawns. That's it.

But they insisted that I tried the mussels and before I sank my teeth into it, I prayed that I'm not allergic to it (yes, I pray a lot). Hmm...the verdict: I feel like I'm in an episode of Fear Factor. Only the garlic butter taste makes it tolerable. Eating mussels feels like eating lizards (though I've never tried eating lizards before). It's so...slimy and chewy. Managed to swallow the whole mussel though. Congratulations to me.

Then, satisfied and full, we went back to the office. I struggled to stay awake while reading the Revenue Integrity functional specs.

Day 8: My phone is functioning as normal!

Went to Sg. Wang with my parents to repair my phone. The dude said that it's a memory card problem, not a phone problem. He told me to format the memory card. So I bought a card reader and format the memory card at home, and my phone is OK now. Yay!

Had lunch at Nandos. I'm sick of Nandos. Couldn't finish my food. But the peri wedges was still yummy though.

Went to ISetan. Bought a maroon-coloured shirt to wear to work, and a pair of grey pants. My mum used to complain about the fact that I always wear jeans to work. I didn't exactly wear jeans. The design of the pants was like a jeans (with the label at the waistband and all that) but the fabric isn't denim. It's curduroy (do I spell it right?). But whatever, it's pointless arguing with my mum about fashion so I bought a pair of formal workwear pants just to satisfy her.

I've found some ways on how to motivate myself to enjoy my job. Whenever I'm facing an obstacle, I will just remind myself of:

1) The pay... Always remember that you get paid five times more that what your father used to give you!!!

2) Free flight tickets

3) Free medical plus insurance

4) Free dental

5) The job market is highly competitve nowadays, so you can't quit! Else you will tanam anggur for the rest of your life!

6) There's always weekends to look forward to! And dates with my bf.

7) ...and public holidays.

8) I have my annual leave...plus that in-lieu leave thingy.

Honestly, I don't know for how long money and benefits can motivate me. People say in the long run these things won't matter anymore.

Buka puasa at Seri Pacific, KL

We all got problems. But life goes on right? That's why I decided to follow my parents today to break fast at Seri Pacific Hotel in KL instead of sitting at home, drowning in a sea of tears and eating Maggi for buka puasa. Ha ha.

Initially I thought we were going to the Pan Pacific Hotel in KLIA. Turns out that it's actually the Seri Pacific Hotel which is located in near PWTC and The Mall. Apparently, Malaysia Airlines owns 11% of the Seri Pacific share so my dad got an invitation to eat there for free. Yeay.

International buffet was serve. There was a great variety of food. The Ramadhan buffet was held at the Japanese restaurant, coz the grand ballroom was booked for some other event. So most of the food served during the buffet was Japanese food.

Oh.My.God. The makciks and pakciks there were like piranhas. Or ular sawa. I don't know. When I arrived at the hotel, it was still very early, but people were already queuing up, getting as much food as they can. I think my family's table is the table with the least amount of food. Other people's tables...God...it seems like they haven't ate for 10 years! Tamak btul time puasa nih.

I had a small portion of fried rice, broccoli, stir-fried vegetables and grilled fish. Yummy. One thing you have to know about me is that it is not worth it to bring me to a buffet coz I only ate a little.

I had sushi (doesn't taste as good as Sushi King and Sakae Sushi) and vegetable and prawn tempura.So these are the only thing I ate. And then followed by fruits. Lots of lots of fruit. Oh, and I nibbled a bit of the chocolate brownie and chocolate fondue that my mum took.Serious rugikan bawa I pegi buffet???Luckily the buffet was free.

The cupcakes are a combination of my favourite colours! Yes, they are very simple and I used basic shapes. I'm not that creative like those people who can draw absolutely everything on cupcakes.Hehe.

Tony Roma's

Had lunch for the first time at Tony Roma's today. My dad had eaten there before and he reccomended the potato skins. Actually it was my mum's idea to eat at Tony Roma's coz whenever my dad's paying, she will pick a restaurant that offers nothing below RM15 in the menu. Hehe.

I had a craving for carbs, so I order the shrimp pasta. Delicious.


The potato skins are simply lip-smacking good! Imagine melted cheese on crispy potato skins, dipped in sour cream..Mmmm....

Actually there's 6 potato skins. I tak sempat amik gambar my parents dah telan. It's sooo yummy!!! We ordered two plates!!

Besides that, I also stole some chicken salad from my parents' plates. I've ran out of adjectives to describe how good Tony Roma's food tasted.

I'm definitely coming back for more.

Tonight I'm off to Heathrow. Will be in London for a week. Already booked the B&B. I hope I've made the right decision.

I had shortlisted 3 B&Bs. One in Notting Hill, and two in Bayswater (Leisure Inn and Hyde Park Whiteleaf). My dad told me to find out which one is the nearest to the tube station. All three are near to tube stations. So I made my decision based on the guest reviews.

I rejected the one in Notting Hill because one of the reviews said that the toilets need repairing. One of the B&Bs in Bayswater (Leisure Inn) received this one bad review that says the place is filthy, the staffs are rude and things like that. So I booked Hyde Park Whiteleaf. It has no review. Uh-oh. I hope I made the right choice.

Today before I leave for UK, had a date with my bf at Pavillion. Bought more neccessities that I forgot to buy yesterday: facial blotting papers, cotton pads, nasal spray and a Little Black Dress book.

We had lunch at Pastamania. Gosh, I just love it there!

I'm not really a fan of pizzas but I had to say that this one is really,really good. The best pizza I've ever tasted. The ingredients are so fresh! The mushrooms and capsicums are so juicy.

We ordered Italian sodas (me: mango, him:passionfruit). Taste like Esprit. But I love it though.

I ordered Spicy Chicken pasta. The picture's really crappy. Didn't capture the "deliciousness" of the pasta.

I can't stand the thought of being on the plane for 13 hours. This is what I hate about travelling. The whole "getting-there" process.

Will take lots of pics. I hope I won't look like shit once I'm there.

Delicious fried kuey teow

I can't remember when was the last time I enjoyed a good fried kuey teow.

I've banned kuey teow for myself ever since I started my weight loss program.

Now I feel a sudden craving for it.

So...to eat? Or not to eat?

My mum's cupcakes

Now cupcakes are the "in" thing. People use cupcakes as their call cards. We see cupcake shops everywhere. And online as well. They even serve cupcakes at weddings.

My mum doesn't want to be the uncool one left out. So she ditched her traditional prune cake, pineapple tarts recipes...and focused on the current trend--cupcakes.

Last night my mum planned to bake cupcakes today. It's supposed to be a mother-and-daughter thing, I will help her bake the cupcake/do the icing/decorate.But it turned out to be a mother one-woman show only (Haha...is there such thing as "one-woman show"? I've only heard of "one-man show.") My mum did all all the baking etc etc. It's not because I was being a total lazy ass. No. It's because she INSISTED that she do everything on her own, coz she's the expert here. So I left her in the kitchen, working on her big cupcake project.

After she had baked all the cakes, I volunteered to help with the icing. She said it's OK, it's simple. Just mix butter, sugar, vanilla essence. OK, fine. I went back to my room and surfed the Internet.

Once the icing is done, finally she let me get involved. My task was to decorate the cupcakes. But I wasn't the only one doing it,of course. She's involved as well. She kept reminding me of the techniques, how to use the nozzle/piston whatever. Finally, our work was completed.

The cake is DRY and the icing's too sweet that my tongue HURTS. Haha.

Cupcakes and dolls

Last week I went to KLCC and saw some scrumptious-looking cupcakes at Bakin' Boys. I wanted to try it but my mum said it's overpriced and probably doesn't taste as good as homemade ones. So I sulked like a little kid.

Today went to KLCC again coz I wanted to find the Marks & Spencer Lavender 3-in-1 Body, Room and Linen Spray. I was determined to try the cupcake. And my mum, she's being kind this time, agreed. She even tried one too.

The cupcake was delicious. Very sweet though. RM4 each.

I remember the time when everyone was crazy about those cute cupcakes. At that time I could only find cupcakes in Damansara. Lots of cupcake shops there. Cupcake Chic,Wondermilk (Up until now I still dunno where on earth is Wondermilk). It's hard to find cupcakes here in Ampang, and I tried searching for it when I'm in Subang. None!

Now cupcakes are available in Ampang. Yeay! I've tried those cupcakes at one of the kiosks in Great Eastern mall. Taste really good, not too sweet. A large sized cupcake cost RM3.50, and it's RM10 for three. That's the cheapest cupcake I could find.

You can also try the cupcakes at The Lawn, KLCC. Yummy as well. Priced at RM5 each I think.

Anyway, back to the main objective why I went to KLCC. I couldn't find the 3-in-1 spray. Instead, I bought the lavender anti-perspirant deodorant. I thought the deodorant is like Impulse, you can use it as a body spray as well. But it's not! The M&S deodorant left a white residue after you spray it. Kind of ruined whatever fabric that you spray it on. Inilah akibatnya nak berjimat cermat sangat. I was hesitant to spend RM177 on the L'Occitane lavender spray, and RM120 for Crabtree & Evelyn lavender water.

OK, the lavender thing is a big dissappointment. Buttttt....I found something that I really like at Kinokuniya. Momiji dolls!In other words, those cute Japanese dolls. (I never grow up, always young at heart :) )

I bought one of the dolls. It's sooo hard to pick which one I like coz all of them are so supercute! I finally decided on a doll called "Clever Clogs." Each dolls has its own personality.

I like Soul too. But her eyes are so sepet.

Anyway, a few days ago my dad attended a course. He got these books for free! These books are on my wishlist! :D

I'm so happy coz this week only 3 days of classes. Another reason why I'm happy is that even though yesterday I pigged out during the buffet lunch with Mr.Y's family at Hilton, eating all those cupcakes and chocs, my weight is still maintained at 45kg. *clap clap*

The worst McD in the world

McDonalds Alamanda!!

Here's why:

1)There's this one time I ordered Spicy McShaker fries. The cashier gave me the fries and the seasoning powder and said, "Yang ni shake sendiri eh!"I was like, duhh! Of course la I have to shake it myself. There's probably two reasons why she said that to me:
a)She thinks I'm from some rural kampung area and never been to a McDonalds restaurant before or
b)Previously there were customers who told her to shake the fries for them.

2)Sometimes the burgers there are supersalty! I wonder what happened? Did someone accidently spill a bucket of salt at the factory where they made the burger patties?

3)Sometimes if you order McShaker fries, the person at the counter forgets to give you the seasoning powder. So all you have is a normal fries. And sometimes, you order a Big Mac, what you get is a beef burger.

Besides that, Alamanda also has the worst Baskin Robins in the whole of Malaysia. Most of the times the staffs there are just too "busy" to entertain you.

Btw, ever since I stopped taking Diane-35, the acne has come back!

My dad got this book for free at his office. It's a yearly publication for Malaysian fresh graduates, regarding careers and employment. But it's the year 2005 edition. But much more helpful than Jobstreet though. Has all the list of companies related to your course, and also employer's profiles.

Handbag charm bracelet

This lovely rhodium-plated charm bracelet is featured in the latest Malaysia Airlines' Temptations catalogue. I love the little handbag-shaped pendants. Price: RM78. Plus free necklace. In the catalogue, the free necklace is a cute silver necklace with a handbag pendant too. But on the Temptations website, the free necklace is a plain silver chain with two interlocking rings. I want this charm bracelet!!! It's so cute, and it reflects my personality (I'm addicted to handbags).

Went to KLCC. Got a RM10 Kinokuniya voucher so this is what I got for myself! My third recipe book!

I know the previous recipe book that I bought is also on Asian rice dishes, but this one is different. Perfect book for beginners coz the recipes are simple and basic.It features more rice recipes...Chinese fried rice, Malay style fried rice, kai lan with oyster sauce, fried rice with salted fish, tomato rice, all kinds of fried rice lah..Got recipes for nasi lemak, chicken rice, lontong (rice cakes with vegetable curry) and chicken briyani also. OK,OK, enough, I'm fasting and it makes my mouth water.

Right now I'm craving for expensive food. I want premium ice creams (Haagen Dazs), I want choccies like Fidani, Godiva...I want all the pastas at Dome Cafe, and those chocolatey drinks they have.

My first recipe books!

Today I went to MPH Great Eastern mall and bought my first two recipe books!

I wanted cheap recipe books, preferably below RM10, and I want it to be small-sized. Cute! Oh, and the recipes must be simple too. These books fit the bill perfectly.

The recipes are all mouth-watering. Can't wait to try them! Hehe. I'm so excited to cook ever since I got my multi cooker!

So far, I've cooked twice using the multi cooker. The first time, I made fried rice. Err...it turned out to be salty. The second attempt, I made spicy tamarind sauce for buka puasa the other day. I was rushing that day, so I just throw in the sauce and some vegetables.

Went to Uniten to check into my new apartment. Thank God the elevator was functioning. If not I would have to drag my heavy bags up to third floor.My room looks like a prison. Dark, gloomy, sad, depressing. The curtain looks like it haven't been washed since Uniten first opened in 1997. The toilet is quite inconvenient-the toilet bowl and shower are seperated. It's a hassle if in the mornings I want to pee and then take shower.

Went home, then had lunch at Great Eastern mall. Tried "Braised Towfoo" at Chicken Rice Shop for the first time. Taste good, plus it's a source of progestrone also. The towfoo is braised in soy sauce. Yummy.

My dad got RM20 Starbucks voucher coz Starbucks is promoting its brand name to Malaysia Airlines, so I got the pink water tumbler I've always wanted! Heehee. Now I got a cool water tumbler to bring to class everyday, to keep my skin hydrated.

And then, get this--MPH was having a sale at the mall's ground floor and they even have discounts for Peter Pauper journals!! Although it's tempting to buy almost everything on the shelf, I settled for one notebook only, Blue Flower Journal. Original price RM29.90, reduced to RM22. OK, no more notebooks after this.

Ever since I found out about my condition, I seem to have a dislike towards pregnant women, but I grew even more fond of children. Just now I saw this cute little girl hugging a white stuffed cat. Her dad was holding her and she was asking her mum a bunch of questions about her toy. It make me feel sad witnessing the whole happy family thing.

WINDOW SHOPPING: Bought another book by Chris Manby coz I love The Matchbreaker so much. It's called Seven Sunny Days. RM13.90 but RM9.50 after discount. What a bargain. Window shopping at Ace Hardware. Yeah, of all places rite? But surprisingly I wanted to buy lots of things there:

The total price is RM134.70. I jot down the price and consult my father. Father said wait til he gets his bonus. He's been saying that since early this year.

Anyway,I saw this Clinique Happy gift set in pink and orange. I want!!!

Finally I've tried J.Co!! And good news...I'm not addicted!! Yeay! Tried this donut with chocolate cream. Ermm the chocolate is too bitter for me, and I much prefer Dunkin Donuts. Couldn't finish my donut so my bf and I swop donuts. I finished his, which taste a bit better. It has Oreo topping I think.

Lunch at the newly opened Wendy's. I wanted to order baked potato with sour cream and chives but I couldn't find it on the menu and the girl at the counter looked kinda annoyed that we took so long to decide so I chose baked potato with cheese and 4pcs chicken nuggets. Urghh my diet is so ruined. And once I sat down, I notice that baked potato with sour cream is right next to baked potato with cheese on the menu. Arghh! Ermm it's kind of dissappointing coz on the ads the burgers and all the food look so yummy and tempting but once you've had a taste of it, it's no difference that McDonalds.

Since I didn't take any protein for lunch, I felt hungry in the evening so we ate at Sushi King :)

Dreamworld!

Went to OU with my bf. Searched for Wondermilk but couldn’t find it.
Had lunch at Italiennes (yeay!). At first I thought it’s like Nandos standard, but actually it’s more like Fasta Pasta. But whatever. The food was delicious. We ordered carbonara. My diet is totally screwed.
And the highlight of today is...
WE HAD OUR PHOTO TAKEN AT DREAMWORL D FOR THE FIRST TIME!
I’ve always wanted to get our pics taken at a photo booth somewhere. And today my wish came true!We had a great time posing in front of the annoying Japanese-speaking machine. If only that machine can speak English (and in a lower pitch voice please), it would be so much fun. Instead, I had to call upon the assistance of one of the makciks at the counter who clearly doesn’t seem to enjoy her job.
We kept the design of the photos simple. Honestly I don’t like all those hideous frames and ugly effects.
Now we’re addicted to taking pics at photo booths!
And then we window shopped coz I wanted to burn out the calories from the pasta, and then we’re off to Ikea to buy the laundry basket my mum wanted. We window shopped, and bought some stuffs for our cats and then I tried to look for a scrapbook to put all our photos in, but couldn’t find a cute one.
Since we couldn’t find Wondermilk, we found the substitute—Cupcake Chic. I had the Naughty & Nice cupcake (vanilla muffin + chocolate cream) and the bf had Fatal Attraction(chocolate muffin + chocolate cream). One cupcake cost RM4.50 which I think is totally worth it coz it was enough to satisfy my cupcake cravings.
Anyway, I had sooo much fun. Thanks for the wonderful day dear!
My weight is 49.5 now and I’m planning to fast for the next two days.
