Visit to the wastewater treatment plant

Dear bloggy,

Today I went for a visit to a wastewater treatment plant for my Water & Wastewater Engineering class. We were supposed to go on that trip once we finished studying wastewater treatment, but my classmates are so semangat, they organized the trip earlier. My friends who had taken this subject last sem went to the treatment plant in Semenyih, but my batch went to Uniten's wastewater treatment plant. How interesting.

The trip was very brief. The man explained about each of the facilities there, bla bla bla, and then it was over. I wasn't paying attention to what he said. I was a bit slow coz I was confused, the treatment facilities there are different from what I learnt in class. From what I learnt, the wastewater treatment process starts with screening->grit chamber->equalization tank->primary sedimentation tank->biological treatment and so on. But at the plant, the process was starts with coarse screening->aeration->fine screening and etc. Where on earth was the sedimentation tanks?? The guy said that the treatment plant uses the latest technology, and the whole biological process is included in the aeration tank. This makes me even more confuse than ever. Biological treatment right after screening?

Besides, I couldn't differentiate between all the tanks. They look exactly the same! Big tanks with dirty water.

There's this facility called the "scrapper", I don't know what is its purpose. There were floating pads and condoms. It was disgusting. The plant uses the latest tech and yet it couldn't even filter out the pads and condoms. The treatment plant man said the fine screen will get rid of that. Okayyy.

We had to write a report at the end of the semester about this trip, so I took some pictures. No pictures of me though. But then again, who wants to pose at a wastewater treatment plant??

This is a mechanical screen. Better label the pictures, for my future reference when I wanna do the report later.

I don't even know what this is. I just snap the picture.
This is an aeration pond. This pond contains microorganisms which helps eat the waste and treat the water. The aerator provide oxygen so that the microorganisms can survive. Due to the high content of dissolved oxygen here, the man who gave us the briefing said that the water here is so fresh that fishes can live here. There are more than 100 fishes in this pond.

What is this? No idea. What am I going to write in the report?!

The scrapper, where all the disgusting trapped pads were. I wonder who are the idiots who flushed their pads down the toilet bowl??
The sludge bed
I don't know what this is either. It looks like a baffle.
See? I told you the equipments are boring and looks almost the same!
The staffs at the treatment plant was extremely nice. The briefing man told us to visit him and the plant more often. I guess he's bored too.
